LAVARACK’S TURTLE
Elseya lavarackorum

First described as a fossil from the Riversleigh deposits of the Gulf region, this species was later found to be alive and well in Lawn Hill National Park.

In this sense it is a ‘living fossil’. Range now thought to extend across the rivers draining into the Gulf of Carpentaria.
